The intermediate archivolt ^ is
coated with plain slabs of grey

on it outside a series of figures
much crowded. in a twined wreath
of cylindrical stems with vine leaves
the twining of it & small fillings
most lovely: and ingenious . but
inelegant on the whole.
- the sub soffit of it has two
monstrous figures upholding the
leaves out of which the rolling frieze
rises: one has two serpents out of
his mouth who bites his limbs
the other has two biting her breasts
animals generally dead or devouring
each other are mixed among the
leafage: several birds however [continues p. 46]
