[No.20] [RL 1636 box] St Marks. [diagram] [drawing] In the Nave: there are three great shafts on each side carrying stilted arches. Of these the bases are remarkable first for the appearance of a band or ring about the bottom of the shaft: so completely resembling an addition for protection that I at first supposed it so. : it is a - b in section: projecting more or less: in one or two of the shafts hardly ½ an inch. in others an inch It iss a separate slab put under the shaft - the section is confused both at a and b by the mortar: It is decidedl ungraceful. The fillet c d seems to have been intended for a vertical - but it slopes outwards more or less: sometimes considerably. The torus. b c. f h. are very flattened and rude semicircular, perhaps from wear . hi. k? are two simple square slabs which bear the circular upper members; The section is of course through the side. h g. becoming long at the angle. In the third, that next the central door, on the right hand as one enters, their angles are occupied by heart shaped [?], the [genus?] of those of the Doges palace. as shown above at B. - but entirely without decoration - heavy - blunt pointed - and reminding onee aa little of a shoe sole. The measures of the entire base are. very various - but on and average are - Over side of sq. of lower slab. at l. or k. 3 “ 2. ____ _______ upper ____ i. or h 2 “ 10 Circumference at f __________ 7 “ 8 ½ Breadth of the root of each of four leaves out of that circumference or the 3rd shaft. - “ 10 Height. l k. from ground; red verona marble. ___ 6 vary to 8. ___i h; white sugary marble.
