fol. 72r [fol. 71v is blank] 'Of Truth of Space … Power of the Eye' (Pt II, Sn II, Ch V) (3.331, 330) *

would have appeared to you - In <c>Claude you can count every
     <one> {battlement} . & see it distinctly ^ {& separately} In nature - you would
     							        have seen a peculiar
confused roughness of the line . a multitude of <dots> - and intersections .
which you would have known was indicative of battlements - but
5 would nature have let you count them - She would have seen
you hanged first. In Claude - the wall below is one dead
void of grey . Nothing whatever can you see or feel in it . Nature
would have let you see thousands of spots & lines - a confused
transparency of <full &> abundant objects - not one would she
10 have let you make out indeed - but the stones - & the quoinings -
and the moss stains - and the broken <arches>lights would <[?]>all have been
there - none seen as such - none in the least degree like anything .
but all there - little shadows and sparkles and scratches and patches -
filling up with an infinity of mystery - the even space of <sh[?]> grey .
15 Again. Look at the street in the centre of the middle distance , in
the really great and excellent landscape of Poussin in the
Dulwich gallery . marked --- The houses are dead <*…*>square masses
with a light side & dark side - & black touches for windows - This is
not nature - She would have let you see the Indian corn hanging
20 <from> on the walls - and the image of the virgin in the corner<s> - and
the sharp broken shadows of the tiled eaves - and the white flash of
the mattresses hung out to dry - & the flapping corners of the mat
