fol. 77r [fol. 76v is blank] 'Of Truth of Space … Power of the Eye' (Pt II, Sn II, Ch V) (3.337) *

church as you can - without losing sight of the top of it . Look at the capitals
of the small columns which form the balustrade on the first story - above
the round arches. You see they are exquisitely rich . and carved all
over - Tell me their patterns - You can't. Tell me the direction
5 of a single line in them - You can't. Yet you see they are all over
lines - and have so much feeling of certain tendency and arrangement
in those lines that you are quite sure the capitals are beautiful -
and that they are all different from each other . and yet I defy
you to make out one single line in any one of them . Now Go to
10 Canalettis picture of this church . taken from the spot you stood on .
in the Palazzo . How much has he represented of all this . A black
dot under each capital for the shadow - & a yellow one on it for the light -
<No carvin> not only is the carving not made out - it is not even
hinted at . Now this may be fine painting perhaps - that we
15 are not talking of now - we shall see hereafter - but it is not -
truth - nor will it ever have the impression or effect of truth on
     the mind.
Now go to one of the detailed bit of Roberts - I don't remember one
of his - of this very subject - but any of his fairly detailed bits will do .
20 <not one of his finished drawings - which are often quite perfect in their way .
but one of his sketches> . There you will see the ornament given by
a few beautifully chosen lines - exquisitely true in form and relation
