Euclid

Euclid: Mathematician of Alexandria active c.300 B.C., writer of a text book The Elements (Stocheia) and other works on elementary and higher geometry. Ruskin refers to the self-contained proofs devoid of empirical evidence, used to confirm the theorems of geometry; such an approach to his own subject is a wishful one since he must accumulate supportive evidence to make his argument convincing.
