the painter of the Last Judgment

The reference is to Michelangelo, who painted the fresco of the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican between 1536 and 1541. The reference is presumably to the visit to Rome by Benvenuto Cellini, the sculptor of the Perseus, to persuade Michelangelo to return to Florence. Michelangelo had a reputation as an unsociable person, concentrating solely on his work. However there is a reference in Bull, 1995, to a letter of 15 December 1521 from Leonardo Sellaio to Michelangelo:

Leonardo's admonition to Michelangelo not to go out at night (for practices harmful to mind and body) suggests perhaps that Michelangelo was drinking too much (rather more rare and shameful in Italy than the north, and maybe looking for shameful, risky company.
