Vaseni

In later editions Vaseni is emended to read Vasari. Ruskin's handwriting is such that it is difficult for a reader to distinguish 'en' and 'ar'.

However, Reynolds in discussing San Pietro Martire (Titian) cites not Vasari but Algarotti as an example of the point that 'connoisseurs will always find in pictures what they expect to find' ( Reynolds, Discourses, p. 199). Francesco Algarotti, 1712-1764, an Italian writer and critic was a collector himself, and an adviser to Frederick the Great of Prussia on the acquisition of paintings.
