Phidias

Phidias (Pheidias) born c.490BC. Athenian sculptor.

Ruskin 's discussion of elaborate geometery in connection with Pheidias is more accurately applicable to Pheidias' associate Ictinus, who was the architect of the Parthenon itself. His statues included the bronze Athena Promachos which stood near the Propylaea on the Acropolis, the Athena Lemnia and the Athena Parthenos, a huge chryselephantine statue of the goddess placed in the temple dedicated to her. The latter dates from 447-432 B.C. when he was commissioned by Pericles to design the Parthenon sculptures.
