Vasari on Michelangelo stresses the importance of chiaroscuro as a part of Michelangelo 's 'disegno', giving relief to painting, and imitating the excellence of nature with the highest form of knowledge which many call 'intelligenza' (see Vasari, Le Vite, Testo VI.3).
