THE CAMPO OF SAN MAURIZIO
MAY GOD
LONG PRESERVE FOR US
THE MOST CONSCIENTIOUS AND MOST REVEREND
DON LUIGI PICCINI
OUR NEW PARISH PRIEST.
THE REJOICING PARISHIONERS
The church of San Maurizio is between St. Mark's and the Accademia bridge. Each of the parishes in Venice had an open space called a 'campo' attached to it. 'Square'or 'Place' might be English translations of 'campo', except that the 'Piazza di San Marco' is now usually translated as 'St. Mark's Square', and appears on this page as 'St. Mark's place'. The differences in status between St. Mark's and the parish churches seems to demand a different different word to refer to the open spaces, in English as in Italian.
'Don' is the normal title for a parish priest, and might perhaps be translated as 'Father'. 'Most reverend' is a descriptive adjective rather than the title of an archbishop as it might be in some English contexts.
Some of the full stops in the passage indicate abbreviations - for example 'S.' for 'San', 'ZELANTIS.' for 'zelanitissimo', the superlative form of 'zelante', and 'D.' for 'Don'. The function of some of the other full stops - for example that after 'CAMPO' and that after 'LUIGI' and 'PICCINI' - is unclear.
