The Mer de Glace is the second largest glacier in the Alps (the largest being the Aletsch Glacier), and is located in the Chamonix Valley on the northern side of Mont Blanc. It has clearly developed medial and lateral moraines. 'The Catalogue of Turner 's Drawings' lists two views of 'The Mer-de-Glace of Chamouni,' one looking 'up stream' one 'down stream' ( Works, 13.371). Ruskin drew the Mer de Glace in 1860.
