Rivaulx

The Anglo-Norman Rievaulx Abbey on the River Rye, in the North York Moors, was founded in 1131 and is the oldest of Yorkshire's Cistercian houses. Its ruins are substantial. Because of siting difficulties the church is oriented north-south. The Norman nave is entered through a galilee at the liturgical west end. The transcepts are a combination of Norman and Early English, the choir being Early English. Remains of the domestic buildings show in a complete way the arrangements of a Cistercian house and include, unusually for a Cistercian foundation, an apse ended chapter house. Ruskin refers to a drawing by Turner.
