On the size of Tintoretto 's work compare Ruskin 's letter to John James Ruskin on 24 September 1845 (quoted at Works, 4.xxxviii), the day on which he was first overwhelmed by Tintoretto: 'Tintoret don't seem able to stretch himself till you give him a canvas forty feet square'. Tintoretto worked on a large scale, but not often of the size mentioned here by Ruskin. The Crucifixion in the Scuola di San Rocco is 536cm by 1224cm; the the large Paradise in the Ducal Palace is 700cm x 2200cm.
