St. Francis receiving the Stigmata

Titian makes use of the traditional iconography in which the kneeling St. Francis receives the stigmata by means of beams of light from the crucifix. The version by Giotto in the Bardi Chapel at Santa Croce in Florence is an example. See Tietze, Tizian, I. p. 209, for a reproduction of the woodcut by Titian and compare the version at Ascoli Piceno, Pinacoteca Communale, in which St. Francis receives the stigmata from the risen Christ rather than from the crucifix
