our Cumberland lakes

Ruskin refers to the Lake District, in his time in Cumberland (now Cumbria). Ruskin remembered his early love of the Cumberland Lakes in Praeterita (1885-9) ( Works, 35.94). Ruskin's visits to the Lake District included those made in 1824, 1826, 1827, 1830, 1837, 1838 and 1847. Ruskin lived at Brantwood on Coniston Water from 1871 until his death in 1900 and is buried in Coniston churchyard. See Cumberland.
