The first reference on this page continues the argument of the previous page about Canaletto 's inferior workmanship as shown in his treatment of water. Ruskin felt able at the end of his life to modify to some extent his views on aspects of Canaletto's workmanship (see Works, 3.216 and Works, 34.454). The second reference on this page appears to suggest that Canaletto's ripples were inexcusable because he was in other respects blunt and lacking in vitality. On this passage see Ruskin's depreciation of Canaletto, and there particularly the references to Canaletto's use of colour, and Canaletto's influence, which was the more dangerous because Canaletto's reputation was as a painter of truth.
