The reference is to Perugino 's fresco of the Crucifixion painted between 1493 and 1496 for the Chapter House of what was then the Cistercian Monastery in Borgo Pinti, Florence. The body of Sta Maddalena dei Pazzi was later taken to the monastery; hence the name used by Ruskin. In the fresco there are painted arches apparently supporting the Chapter House vaults, and opening onto the landscape with a river which provides the setting for the Crucifixion. The fresco was first seen by Ruskin on 16 June 1845 (see Shapiro, Ruskin in Italy: Letters to his parents 1845, p. 116), and the reference appears for the first time in the third edition. Ruskin gives a detailed description of the fresco in Modern Painters II ( Works, 4.321).
