Interlachen, or Interlaken, is a Swiss town on the Aare River between the Lake of Brienz and the Lake of Thun in the Bern canton. One of the oldest tourist resorts in Europe, Interachen is the point of departure for many tours of the Alps. Ruskin 's visits to Interlachen include those made in 1833, 1856 and 1866. He refers to its geomorphology which has the mountains seemingly rising directly from the adjacent plain.
