Naples

Naples (Napoli), is the capital of Campania in south central Italy. It is situated on the north side of the Bay of Naples, a semi-circular inlet of the Tyrrhenian Sea which is surrounded by steep mainly volcanic hills dominated by the active volcano Mount Vesuvius. Ruskin describes aspects of Naples in his his first published work The Poetry of Architecture (1837-38), but did not visit Naples for the first time until 1841. In Modern Painters Ruskin unfavourably compares the rendering of this landscape by Claude with his own observations of it.
