the fall of Schaffhausen

The famous Schaffhausen Falls, or the Rhine Falls, are located on the Rhine River below Schaffhausen. Ruskin 's first view of the Alps was from Schaffhausen on the family trip of 1833. Ruskin uses them in Modern Painters as an example of the difficulty of portraying moving water. In 1842 Ruskin made two drawings of the falls which can be equated with their description in Modern Painters.
