Sion is the capital of the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Ruskin 's visits to Sion included those made in 1844, 1849, 1854 and 1872. In the chapter titled 'The Mountain Gloom', from of Modern Painters IV (1856), Sion is the exemplar, for Ruskin, of the decay which can occur in mountain country.
