The Vanity of Human Wishes, published in 1749, was the first of Johnson's works to bear his name. It is a poem based on the Tenth Satire of Juvenal, in which Johnson considers the various objects of human ambition, including a desire for power, beauty, military prowess and learning, and illustrates the ultimate vanity of such longings.
