Solomon's Pools

Jerusalem: Solomon's Pools

By Kind Permission of Leeds University Library

Engraved by Stephenson after Turner. ( Finden's Landscape Illustrations of the Bible, Vol. 1. Rawlinson 580. Wilton 1244.) Turner based this composition on a sketch by Charles Barry which he kept 'on his breakfast table for a month before he could make up his mind how to treat it' ( Works, 13.534) (See Ruskin's attitude to Turner compositions based on sketches by other artists.)

In The Elements of Drawing this engraving is recommended by Ruskin as particularly worthy of study ( Works, 15.76). The sky of this composition is discussed in Modern Painters V (1860) ( Works, 7.154-5).
