Allen

James Bayliss Allen (fl. 1803-76). Engraver. His first work with Turner was a plate published in 1830 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales, and he went on to engrave several more designs after Turner for The Rivers of France (1833-35) and Finden's Landscape Illustrations of the Bible (1836).

Although Allen was not a prolific engraver after Turner, Ruskin, in a letter of 1841, described his work as 'first-rate' ( Works, 2.xlii). (For further biographical information see Hunnisett, An Illustrated Dictionary of British Steel Engravers, pp.10-11.)
