Rouen, looking down the River

Engraved by Miller after Turner. ( The Rivers of France: Turner's Annual Tour - The Seine, 1834. Rawlinson 466. Wilton 964.)

In The Elements of Drawing (1857), Ruskin recommends careful study of this engraving, which he describes as 'Rouen, with cathedral and rainbow, avenue on left' ( Works, 15.76). Note that the engraving he refers to in Elements as 'Rouen, looking down the river, poplars on right' is not the present work, but Rouen, from St. Catherine's Hill.
