Willmore

James Tibbetts Willmore (1800-63). Engraver. His first work with Turner was a plate published in 1828 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales. He engraved twelve more plates for that series, and went on to engrave a total of 35 plates after Turner during the artist's lifetime, including nine for The Rivers of France.

His name appears in a list of engravers described by Ruskin as 'all first rate' ( Works, 2.xlii) but in Modern Painters Ruskin adversely criticises Willmore's engravings of Turner's The Temeraire, Modern Italy and Llanthony ( MP I:169). (For further biographical information, see Hunnisett, An Illustrated Dictionary of British Steel Engravers, pp.101-2.)
