William Say (1768-1834). Mezzotint engraver. Prolific and highly skilled, he was the first engraver to use a hard steel plate instead of copper for mezzotint (his process was improved upon by Lupton). He engraved eleven of the published plates and two unpublished plates for Turner 's Liber Studiorum. (See Lister, Prints and Printmaking, p. 318, and Davenport, Mezzotints, pp. 183-84.)
