This is Poems by Samuel Rogers. Ruskin 's references to this book in Modern Painters I are always to the 1834 edition, which was the first to be illustrated by steel-engraved vignettes after Turner. In Modern Painters I, Ruskin justifies his frequent reference to the illustrations in this book: 'It is the only one I know in which the engraver has worked with delicacy enough to give the real forms and touches of Turner. 1 can reason from these plates (in questions of form only) nearly as well as 1 could from the drawings' ( MP I:219). (See Ruskin and Turner's illustrations to Rogers's Poems, and also Ruskin, Turner, and engraving.)
