Ruskin 's references in Modern Painters I are always to the 12-volume edition, published by Cadell (1834), with 24 steel-engraved illustrations by Turner. This was a companion edition to Cadell's 28-volume edition of The Prose Works of Sir Walter Scott (1834-36), also illustrated by Turner. Ruskin frequently refers to these collectively as the illustrations to Scott. (See also Ruskin, Turner, and engraving.)
