Beaumont

Sir George Howland Beaumont (1753-1827). Art patron and skilled amateur artist. Born at Dumow, in Essex. Educated at Eton and New College Oxford. Succeeded to the title of seventh baronet of the Beaumont family of Stoughton Grange Leicestershire in 1762. Married Margaret Wells, granddaughter of Lord Chief Justice Wells, in 1778. Visited Italy in 1782 and developed his taste for art. Became Member of Parliament for Beeralson 1790-96. Pupil of John Baptiste Malchair (or Melchair) (1731-1812). Also worked with Joseph Farington (1747-1821) and Thomas Hearne (1744-1817). Collector of old master paintings. His approach to art was based upon the 'rules of taste' as set by the works of Claude, (1600-1682) and Poussin (1594-1665). Encouraged John Constable (1776-1837) and became an arbiter of taste. Aquainted with Reynolds, Wordsworth and Dr Johnson. A director of the British Institution. Opponent of Turner 's developments. Exhibited 36 landscapes at Royal Academy. Died at his home in Coleorton, Leicestershire on 7 February 1827. He left his picture collection to the National Gallery.
