George Cattermole (1800-1868). Illustrator, architectural draughtsman, topographer and historical painter. Around 1814, studied architecture with John Britton (1771-1857). Made illustrations for Britton's Cathedral Antiquities of Great Britain. Associate of the Old Water-Colour Society 1822 and Member 1833. Turned to oil painting in 1852 and worked on historical figure subjects. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1819-27. Devoted a considerable amount of his time to illustration, working on books by Dickens and Scott 's Waverley Novels. Works purchased by John James Ruskin (see Ruskin and Cattermole). Studio sale held on March 8, 1869 at Christie's.
