1892 Dulwich Catalogue
The 1892 Catalogue of The Pictures in the Gallery of Alleyn' s
College of God' s Gift at Dulwich with Biographical Notices
of the Painters. [By Order of the Governors] London:Spottiswoode &
Co. The identification numbers used by Ruskin
and used in Modern Painters were probably those of Ralph Cockburn,
Curator of the Gallery 1816-1820. Earlier Catalogues of the Dulwich Collection
listed in the 1892 Dulwich Catalogue were as follows:
- A Brief Catalogue
of the Pictures, late of the property of Sir Francis bourgeois, R.A.., by
J[ohn] Britton; May 24, 1813.
- A Catalogue by Ralph Cockburn, Curator
of the Gallery, 1816-1820. This was a mere list of the pictures, with artists'
names.
- An Historical and Descriptive Catalogue, by Stephen Poyntz
Denning, assisted by his son, the Rev. Stephen Denning. This never was printed,
the MS. having been removed from the College after his (Dennings) death.
-
A Descriptive Catalogue with Biographical Notices of the Painters by John
Sparkes, Headmaster of the Lambeth School of Art and of the Art Department
of Dulwich College; London, 1876.
- Catalogue, with Biographical
Notices of the Painters, by Jean Paul Richter, Ph.D., &c., and John
C. L. Sparkes, Headmaster of the National Art Training School, South Kensington,
Director of the Lambeth School of Art, &c., &c.; London 1880.
The 1892 Dulwich Catalogue was largely based upon the last two items in
this list.
