Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding (1787-1855). Landscape and marine painter. Pupil of John Varley. First exhibited at the Water Colour Exhibition in Spring Gardens in 1810 and became an Associate of the Water Colour Society (see the Old Water-Colour Society). Member in 1812, Treasurer in 1817 and Secretary in 1818. Elected President on the death of Joshua Christall (1767?-1847), an office he carried until his death. Concentrated largely upon English subjects, the landscapes of Yorkshire, and downs of Sussex. Well known also for his seascapes of storms and wrecks. Ruskin was personally fond of Copley Fielding and his work (see Ruskin and Fielding). He also took a series of lessons from Fielding in 1835.
