Hogarth

William Hogarth (1697-1764). Major English painter and engraver, famous for his depiction of moral subjects. Studied at the St Martin's Lane Academy and later was instrumental in the promotion of another Academy which was a forerunner of the Royal Academy. Produced many engravings and works in series, including: the Harlots Progress (1732), the Rakes Progress (1735), Marriage a la Mode (1743-1745) and the Election (1754). Visited France in 1743 and published his book on aesthetics, The Analysis of Beauty in 1753. Ruskin thought highly of Hogarth.
