Hans Holbein (1497-8-1543). Painter, draughtsman and designer. Son of Hans Holbein (1460-65-1534). Worked in Basle and made master in the Basle guild of painters in 1519. Travelled to England in 1526 and painted a portrait of Sir Thomas More in 1827. Returned to Basle 1528-32 and to England 1532-43. Painted The Ambassadors in 1533. Largely known for his work as a portrait painter in England working under the patronage of Henry VIII.
