Sir David Wilkie (1785-1841). Scottish genre and historical painter. Born in Cults, Fifeshire. Studied at the Trustee's Academy in Edinburgh and the Royal Academy Schools from 1805. Influenced by Dutch art, in particular Ostade and Teniers. Elected ARA in 1809 and RA in 1811. Changed his style, following a visit to Austria, Germany, Italy and Spain (1825-1828) having been impressed with the work of Velazquez and Murillo. Appointed Painter to the King in 1830. Knighted in 1836. Worked mainly in oil, but was also a watercolourist and etcher. Died on the return trip from Constantinople and Palestine and was buried at sea; the subject of Turner 's painting Peace - Burial at Sea.
