No doubt there were rude and ignorant painters in the thirteenth century, as in any other. However, the remark does suggest a view, deriving from Vasari, of the progress of Italian painting from the crudity of the Byzantine schools to the perfection of Michelangelo and Raphael, a view based on a set of assumptions which Ruskin in his more considered remarks seeks to challenge.
