Memmi

Ruskin is here following Vasari who attributes three sides of the frescoes of the so-called Spanish Chapel opening off the main cloister of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, to the Sienese painter Simone Martini (who died in 1344 and is also called Simone Memmi by Vasari), with help from his brother-in-law, Lippo Memmi (who died in 1357 and whose work often reflects that of his better known brother-in-law)., The two co-operated on the Annunciation of 1333 in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. However, since the frescoes were commissioned in 1365 the attribution to them of the work in the Spanish Chapel is impossible, and that is now attributed to Andrea Bonaiuti da Firenze.
