Gaspard Dughet known to Ruskin as Gaspard Poussin, Landscape in the Roman Campagna ( near Albano?) (c.1670) (Oil on canvas, 48.3 x 66 cm). National Gallery, no. 68. The painting represents a landscape of the countryside near Rome, believed to be Albano, south-east of the city. The1995 National Gallery Catalogue notes that the painting is likely to have been painted as a pendant to Gaspard Dughet, Landscape in the Roman Campagna ( Baker and Henry, National Gallery Catalogue, p.201); National Gallery, no. 98. Gaspar Dughet 1615-75
Landscape in the Roman Campagna (near Albano?) c.1670
Oil on canvas, 48.3x66cm
Provenance: Probably Corsini collection, Rome, by 1787; collection of William Young Ottley by 1800; bought by Holwell Carr in 1818; his bequest, 1831
Further Comments: It is the 'Galleria di Sopra' which skirts the upper margin of the Lake of Albano, which is here represented. However, according to the catalogue of the National Gallery, the scene is situated to the south-east of Rome, and only probably near Albano.
Collection: National Gallery, London
