Nicolas Poussin, A Roman Road (1648) (Canvas, 79.3 x 100 cm). Now Number 203, Dulwich Gallery. In the Dulwich Picture Gallery Catalogue, Peter Murray considers the view that this painting, together with its pendant, Landscape with a man washing his feet at a fountain is a copy. X-rays have demonstrated that A Roman Road is painted over the beginnings of another painting by Poussin ( Murray, Dulwich Picture Gallery, pp.92-3). Others, including Anthony Blunt, have argued that both paintings are originals.
