Shipping off a Coast (The Tempest)

Ruisdael 's Shipping off a Coast (The Tempest) (oil on canvas, 110 x 156 cm) was purchased by the Musée du Louvre in 1783 (No. 2558). Turner made sketches from this painting in 1802 (see Walford, Jacob van Ruisdael and the Perception of Landscape, p. 190). However, Ruskin did not know of its existence before working on the third edition (1846). As he explained in a footnote ( MP I:340), it was drawn to his attention by Charles Eastlake, after he had written that 'I wish Ruysdael had painted one or two rough seas'. Yet a knowledge of the painting did not improve his opinion of Ruisdael's art. Conversely, the distinguished French art critic, Théophile Thoré, cited it as an example of a poetic response to nature in the dedication of his contemporary 1845 Salon (see Walford, Jacob van Ruisdael and the Perception of Landscape, p. 193).
