Ruskin on Teniers

Ruskin made only a few isolated references to Teniers in Modern Painters I, praising some 'very wonderful passages' of open sky in his landscapes ( MP I:211), while criticising the foreground of A Castle and its Proprietors as 'an example of all that is wrong' ( MP I:311). However, in Modern Painters V he assessed the artist in more general terms, admitting his skilfulness ( Works, 7.494) but rejecting his influence as immoral and unspiritual ( Works, 7.331).
