Though Ruskin dismissed Wouwerman in a single reference in Modern Painters I, he criticised the artist in some detail in Modern Painters V (1860), and especially by way of the extreme contrast of Fra Angelico ( Works, 7.363, 367-70). Wouwerman is taken as representative of the Dutch School, being mechanical in his workmanship, and cold and mundane in his representation of landscape and its inhabitants.
