Shechinah

'Shechinah', or 'Shekinah', derives from the Hebrew shakhan, and means 'dwelling' or 'that which dwells'. The word is not used in the Old Testament but occurs frequently in other Jewish literature, applied solely to God. The Shekinah was the source and centre of the glory manifested in the cloud in the tabernacle ( mishkan, from the same root) and later in Solomon's temple in Jerusalem (I Kings 8.11). In the New Testament the word 'glory' (Greek doxa) can refer to the Shekinah, most significantly in John 1.14: 'And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us ['tabernacled' in us], (and we beheld his glory....)
