(Go to Summary of review of Modern Painters I, Globe, 30 August 1843.)

The production of one who is profoundly versed in the principles as well as in the mechanical details of the art... it is equally clear that he has studied nature with the most enthusiastic devotion, and in localities and under circumstances especially propitious to the study... It is evidently the work of a poet as well as of a painter, and one of no common order.
