Britannia, 9 December 1843
(Go to Summary of Review of Modern Painters
I, Britannia, 9 December 1843, p. 778.)
This is the bold title of a bold work, a general challenge
to the whole body of cognoscenti, dillettanti, and all haranguers, essayists,
critics, on the arts of Italy, Flanders, and England for the last hundred
years... We pronounce the volume to be one of the most interesting and important
which we have ever seen on the subject... a work calculated more than any
other performance in the language to make men inquire into the nature of
these sensations of the sublime, the touching and the delightful.
