Lesser manuscript material associated with Modern Painters I

As well as the two main manuscripts of Modern Painters I there are further sources from later periods which take the form of notes, corrections and memoranda in Ruskin 's own printed copies of Modern Painters I: a third edition (1846), current location unknown, originally owned by his father John James Ruskin and marked up for selections by him, in which Ruskin himself made further notes much later, certainly after 1860 and probably after 1870; and a seventh edition (1867) which he used as a revision copy when he was proposing to rearrange the volume ( Works, 3.xlvii, 682). The latter is extant and in private hands, but its owner refused a request to use it in this edition. Cook and Wedderburn include these notes in footnotes scattered through the text (see proposed rearrangement of Modern Painters I).
