Cook and Wedderburn state that 'passages from the author's draft are occasionally cited or referred to in notes upon the text' (3.li). Their approach to transcription differs from ours in three respects: (1) they make several obvious mistakes in omitting and misreading words; (2) they tidy up not only Ruskin 's punctuation but also his grammar, adding or removing words at will (see Ruskin's punctuation and spelling); (3) when they think it improves the sense, they include words which Ruskin deleted.
