Although accused of overenthusiasm (see here), Modern Painters I is welcomed by the critic of the British Quarterly Review for its high standards of criticism (see here) and its praise of Turner (see here). A keen admirer of Turner, this critic sees poetry and painting as sister arts (see here). While the work as a whole is thought to defy analysis (see here), several passages from the work are quoted to illustrate particular features which are felt to be important: the description of his Mercury and Argus (see here), the advice to young artists (see here), and the emphasis on the study of nature (see here).
