Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897), novelist and critic. Her lifelong association with Blackwood's Magazine began in 1853, by which time she had established a reputation as a novelist. Her review of Ruskin's works (see Blackwood's Magazine, December 1855), comes between Caleb Field (1851), and The Athelings (1857). Her history of Blackwood's, (see Oliphant, Annals of a Publishing House) was published after her death in 1897.
